If Christopher Columbus sailed the ocean blue in 1492, one year later, Ponce de Leon followed, sailing from the West Indies in El Galeón to what is now St. Augustine, Florida.
St. Augustine was to become the oldest European settlement in what is now the United States.
A replica of El Galeón arrived in the Floridian port on Tuesday 21 May 2013 in a dramatic re-enactment of the heroic voyage to celebrate the 500th anniversary of the historic event.
A series of historic reenactments and cultural activities are taking place this year in Florida, especially along what tourism officials have dubbed “Florida's Historic Coast”. Click on the following link for more: Florida's Historic Coast.
