Australia: Can Wallabies End 13 Year Rugby Drought Against All Blacks?

Sports

Sydney is gripped by rugby fever in the run up to the Bledisloe Cup, which will see the Qantas Wallabies try to end a 13 year drought against their arch-rivals, the New Zealand All Blacks, at ANZ Stadium on Saturday 8 August 2015. A series of other activities will be held in the week leading up to the games.

The Bledisloe Cup is a 2 match series, which will be held at ANZ Stadium in Sydney, New South Wales, on Saturday 8 August 2015.

Other events taking place that week will include an interactive Qantas Wallabies fan zone at Sydney’s Pitt Street Mall, a Women in Business and Sport Rugby lunch, a Bledisloe Bay fan day at Darling Harbour, a Classic Wallabies golf day at Manly Golf Club, and the Bledisloe Cup Race Day at Royal Randwick.

“The Festival gives fans a great opportunity to get to Sydney early in the week and enjoy the activities in and around the city leading up to the game," says Qantas Wallabies flanker Michael Hooper.

"It’s a great week to celebrate our rivalry with the All Blacks and I know the players love getting out and enjoying that support before and at the game.”

Rugby 101

Rugby is a form of football, or soccer, that was developed at a school in England in the 19th century.

Opposing players push against each other to gain possession of the ball, which is similar in shape to an American football. They can run with the ball or kick it.

In the United States, rugby gradually evolved into what the Americans call football, and they are now considered to be 2 different sports.

In addition to Britain, rugby is popular in Australia, Fiji, France, Ireland, New Zealand, Samoa, South Africa, Spain, Tonga, and several other countries.

The Hong Kong Rugby Sevens, which is held annually in March at Hong Kong Stadium, is one of the most important sporting events of the year in Hong Kong - and great fun. Click here for more: Hong Kong Rugby Sevens.
