Thailand: Visakha Bucha Celebrates Important Events in the Buddha's Life

Festivals + Holidays

Visakha Bucha Day celebrates the 3 most important events in the Buddha's life: his birth, his enlightenment, and his passing away. Miraculously, all 3 events occur on the same day and the same month on the Lunar Calendar.

Visakha Bucha falls on the full moon day of the 6th month, which usually corresponds to the month of May on the Gregorion Calendar.

In the event of a leap year - when an extra month is added - Visakha Bucha falls on the full moon of the 7th month.

Visakha Bucha is observed in 2015 on 1 June, and the celebrations will continue for another week.

Visakha Bucha is one of the most important holidays in Thailand and other predominately Buddhist countries such as Bhutan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Tibet - but the date varies from country to country.

Visakha Bucha Day commemorates the 3 most important events in the Buddha's life: his birth, his enlightenment, and his passing away. Miraculously, all 3 events occur on the same day and the same month on the Lunar Calendar.

Devotees celebrate Visakha Bucha by visiting temples, bathing the baby Buddha, offering alms to monks, walking in candle-lit processions - the list goes one.

Visakha Bucha has been observed in Thailand for about 7 centuries. It is one of the country's most important holidays. Banks, offices, and schools are closed. Restaurants, shopping malls, and other businesses are usually open.
