Shop + Drink + Eat

One of Hong Kong's few remaining Cantonese style shophouses houses a trendy concept store and a stylish eatery serving signature cocktails and modern British fare in comfortable surroundings. A perfect twosome?

The Pawn and Tang Tang Tang Tang share the same heritage building on Johnston Road in Wanchai on Hong Kong Island, a.k.a. The Wanch.

I am invited for drinks at The Pawn by my good buddies at TravMedia, Maggie Chooi-Walton and Nick Wayland.

Despite the inclimate weather, I make all of my connections, arriving at the venue fully 20 minutes ahead of schedule. Normally I would have simply done some window shopping or browsed through the bookstore down the street.

Except ... just as I cross the street, the drizzle morphs into a torrential downpour. I have no choice but to seek refuge in the nearest enclosed space.

That's when I notice Tang Tang Tang Tang, a concept store housed on the ground floor of the same heritage building that houses The Pawn.

There are furniture and furnishings for the living room, dining room, bedroom, and bathroom - complete with a toilet, with a sign on the seat that reads, "Please do not use!" I'm surprised it is written in English and not simplified Chinese!

There are also some very fashionable garments for both men and women. I am particularly smitten by a stylish sports coat, which was crafted from bamboo, a sustainable resource, which is said to breathe - an important consideration in a city with as much humidity as Hong Kong.

The sports coat carries a breathtaking HK$45,000 (roughly US$5,800) price tag! I keep looking, without bothering to try it on.

I have managed to waste 15 minutes. I am supposed to be upstairs in 5 minutes. I head for the door.

Just as I am about to leave the shop, I spot 4 very attractive men's watches, and one in particular strikes my fancy .

Based on the price of the sports coat, I assume it would be out of my price range. When I ask, however, I am pleasantly surprised to learn that it is on sale. It has been marked down nearly 2/3rds to a very affordable HK$980, or US$130.

I purchase the watch, put it on, and head upstairs.

Drink + Eat

The Pawn closed for 2 months last year and underwent a complete makeover. This is my first visit since it re-opened.

OMG! The space is drop-dead gorgeous. There are lots of armchairs. Whereas the bar and dining areas were a bit rustic before the transformation, they have been re-styled into some very stylish and highly comfortable spaces.

The walls are hung with art from some of Hong Kong's most respected artists. Best of all, the spacious balconies have not been glass-enclosed. Awnings are used to keep the spaces dry, warm, or cool when the need arises.

The Pawn occupies the top 2 floors and roof of one of the few remaining Cantonese style shophouses in Hong Kong.

Fish + Chips

Fish Deck - fish and chips served weekdays at lunch at The Pawn.

Dating back to 1888, the building originally housed a pawn shop on the ground floor and accommodation upstairs. It was re-purposed as a restaurant in 2008.

There is a botanicals bar, a dining area, and a rooftop garden, which can be hired out for special events.

The restaurant serves Modern British fare, fine wines, select whiskies, and handcrafted cocktails.

The bar has launched a Fish Deck weekday special. The set lunch includes a fillet of cod fried in beer batter, served with chunky chips, tartar sauce, and ketchup.
