A couple of weeks ago, American Airlines announced a partnership with the Chicago Cubs of Major League Baseball. Now the air carrier is partnering with another sports franchise, the Los Angeles Clippers of the National Basketball Association.

Is this a trend or what?

American Airlines has a major presence at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), which it has served for more than 80 years. The airline has signed a multi-year partnership with the Los Angeles Clippers, which are the current Pacific Division champions of the Western Conference of the National Basketball Association (NBA).

"American already serves more customers than any other airline at LAX, and our partnership with the Clippers underscores our commitment to Los Angeles – a city that is vital to our global network," says Fernand Fernandez, American Airlines' Vice President – Global Marketing.

"Like the Clippers, we're invested in winning. We're 'going for great' by connecting LAX to the places more customers want to go and spending more than US$2 billion on improvements that will improve the travel experience at the airport and on their flights."

Official Airline

Gillian Zucker, Los Angeles Clippers Vice President of Business Operations, is equally upbest.

“We are pleased to welcome American Airlines to the Clippers family as the Official Airline of the Los Angeles Clippers," Gillian says.

"We look forward to working closely with American to strengthen their brand with the Los Angeles community.”

The American Airline's logo will appear on the court during basketball games at Staples Center, where the basketball team plays home games. The air carrier will also be a featured sponsor during in-game TV and radio broadcasts.

American Airlines maintains a major a hub at Los Angeles International Airport, where the airline operates almost 200 flights a day to 55 travel destinations around the world.

The airline also has major hubs at the following airports in the United States: Charlotte, North Carolina; Chicago-O'Hare, Illinois; Miami, Florida; New York-JFK, New York; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; and Washington, DC.

The Charlotte Hornets, the New York Jets, the Philadelphia Flyers?

All of the cities in which the airline maintains a hub have at least one professional sports franchise - sometimes 2,, 3 or more. Can we expect the announcement of yet more airline-sports team partnerships in the weeks ahead?
