Chiang Mai in Northern Thailand once again tops the list of most popular holiday travel destinations for Thai travellers, a Hotels.com survey reveals. The city is noted for its cool weather and cool temples.
Christmas and New Year's are just around the corner. In the runup to the holiday season, Thai travellers are displaying a preference for domestic travel destinations, with half of hotel reservations booked through Hotels.com for the 20 through 31 December 2014 being for hotels within the country.
Thailand's 2nd largest city, Chiang Mai, headed the list. The capital of Chiang Mai province, the city is an imporant centre of culture. It is also an increasingly popular tourist destination.
Chiango Mai is located 700 kilometres, or 435 miles north of Bangkok. Bisected by the Ping River, a tributary of the Chao Phraya River, it attracts 5 million tourists a year.
All of the other top 10 travel destinations booked for that period were also within Asia - Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, and Singapore.
