Heydar Aliyev International Airport

The national carrier of Azerbaijan, Azerbaijan Airlines is based at Heydar Aliyev International Airport in Baku, the nation's capital.

The airline currently flies to more than 20 travel destinations across the Commonwealth of Independent States as well as China, Europe, the Middle East, and the United States.

The Commonwealth of Independent States is a loose association of countries that were formerly republics of the Soviet Union. It was established following the breakup of the USSR in 1991.

Shortly after the breakup, the government of Azerbaijan announced that it would set up Azerbaijan Airlines, which would be formed from the regional branch of Aeroflot , the USSR's flag carrier.

The airline inherited a fleet of aircraft from Aeroflot, including many Soviet made Tupolev aircraft. The carrier stopped operating Tupolev aircraft in 2010.

The airline's fleet is now exclusively composed of Boeing, Airbus, Embraer airliners.
