The first 17 units of a 38-unit resort have opened at the Nautilus Resort on Muri Beach on the island of Rarotonga on the Cook Islands in the South Pacific.

Included are private junior suites as well as 2 and 3 bedroom villas. Each villa has its own salt water plunge pool.

There are 2 food and beverage outlets: a beachfront restaurant serving Polynesian - European fusion cuisine and a beach bar with views of the beach and lagoon.

Other facilities include an infinity swimming pool, a spa, and a kid’s concierge.

 Cook Islands 101

Located halfway between New Zealand and Hawaii, the Cook Islands comprise 15 small islands with a total land area of 240 square kilometres or 92.7 square miles.

The Cook Islands have a population of 13,700 people, 87.7% of whom are ethnically Maori. Another 5.8% are part-Maori. Tourism is the country’s main industry.

The Cook Islands are essentially an independent country in “free association” with New Zealand, which handles national defence.

The Cook Islands were named after Captain James Cook, an English explorer who was exploring their South Pacific in search of lands that could be colonised.
