Hi! My name is Michael Taylor, I live in Hong Kong, and I'm a self-described Accidental Travel Writer.
I'm a life-long aviation buff, a helpless foodie, a committed oenophile, and an enthusiastic swimmer, cyclist, and Muay Thai practitioner.
I like to read, study foreign languages, and follow sports.
And there's one more thing I like to do: I like to travel! That's why I call myself the Accidental Travel Writer. This all just happened by accident. It wasn't really planned ...
Look my shoulder as I explore Hong Kong, wander the world, and root for my favourite teams!
I have a Master’s Degree in English from San Francisco State University and a Bachelor’s Degree in Chinese Studies from California State University at Eastbay (formerly Hayward).
English is my native tongue. I also speak Mandarin, read and write Chinese, and am proficient in Portuguese.
I was born in Oakland, California. I have also lived in Honolulu, Taipei, New York City, San Francisco, and Macau. I have spent most of my so-called adult life in Hong Kong.
I have visited or lived in the following countries: Brazil, Canada, People's Republic of China, Croatia, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Macao, Malaysia, Panama, Philippines, Portugal, Qatar, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Sweden, Taiwan, Thailand, United Kingdom, United States, and Vietnam.
About the Accidental Travel Writer
The Accidental Travel Writer is a travel blog in the broadest sense of the term. Published seven days a week, it chronicles my personal travel experiences when I am on the road.
I do in-depth flight reviews when I travel. I review the books that I read and the concerts that I attend. I do the occasional rant.
I review hotels, restaurants, night clubs, sightseeing attractions, and museums on an on-going basis. I also publish travel news to keep my readers up to date.
One of my most important niche markets is sports. As you can see from my T-shirts, I'm a big fan of American football. But I focus on fan activities rather than the game itself.
Some of my most popular posts have been about beach barbecues, fan cruises, best hotels for sports fans, and where to root for your favourite team.
Another one of my niche topics is LGBT. I'm firmly committed to the concept that all men - AND women - are created equal. The travel industry ignores this important market at its peril.

In 2012, I started a Top 10 series on sports bars. The first one, entitled Top 10 Oakland Raiders Sports Bars, was the most successful, proving to be one of my most popular posts ever. Four years later, it continues to get traffic.
The following year, I ran a series of elimination contests, starting with 25 sports bars that had been identified as being friendly to football fans of specific football teams. Again, the most successful contest was the one targeted at Raiders fans.
Each week, the bars getting the fewest votes were eliminated. Things really started to heat up when we got down to just 10 bars, with the top three finalists - one in New York City, one in Washington, DC, and one in Phoenix, Arizona - getting thousands of votes.
This is what the President of the fan club based at the winning sports bar has to say:
"The Accidental Travel Writer has given our Oakland Raiders Booster Club significant attention since we were established in 2012.
"One fan actually came to join our club because we were ranked ninth best place to watch Raiders Football in the United States by the website - before we were even aware of the situation!
"It fueled our members and supporters to campaign for the highest number of votes possible in 'The Best Raider Sports Bar in the Nation' contest, which the Accidental Travel Writer launched the following season.
"That time we got notice that we were one of the 25 sports bars nationwide who qualified PRIOR to the contest.
"After we won the contest, with more than 12,000 votes, the Oakland Raiders organization congratulated us for winning the contest. The exposure directly and indirectly led to me to getting invites to very special Raider related events in the following years.
"We are forever grateful for all that the Accidental Travel Writer has done for us!!!"
Michael Smallwood President Phoenician Raiders BC
