Unexpected Benefits of Digital Detox (or All's Well That Ends Well)

IT and Social Media

Digital detox not only lowers stress, enhances human relationships, helps you stay focused, and intensifies your connection with your immediate environment, it can also lead to unexpected benefits.

For reasons that I don’t understand, all of my documents and photos as well as many of my settings disappeared from my computer after I tried to log on to the Internet at TBEX Europe at the Waterfront Congress Centre in Stockholm, Sweden.

This was pretty devastating.

While the photos I took in Stockholm were still in my computer, it would have taken days to sort things out. It hardly seemed worth the effort.

I suffered a similar glitch last year in Bangkok, Thailand, and I was never able to recover anything. All of my photos and documents were lost.

Would I have to start from scratch - AGAIN???

Post Event Tours

Attendees of TBEX get to participate in post-event trips to different parts of the country hosting the event.

Since this year’s TBEX Europe was held in Stockholm, Sweden, we were offered tours to different parts of Sweden.

I signed up for a four-day, three-night trip to Umea, a town of 120,000 people in Vasterbotten in the Northern part of the country.

I wanted to travel as lightly as possible. I was also afraid I might encounter more technical problems.

I made a last minute decision to leave my PC at the flat I rented for one month in Stockholm. I'd deal with my technical issues after I returned from Umea.

Digital Detox

Here I am getting a lesson in digital detox in a one room schoolhouse in Umea, Sweden. My schoolteacher does NOT look amused!

I know!" I thought. "I’ll do ‘digital detox’."

This would be the longest I had been away from smart devices in more than five years.

Cambridge Dictionary defines detox as “to stop taking unhealthy or harmful foods, drinks, and other substances into your body for a period of time, in order to improve your health.

So what does “digital detox” mean?

According to Wikipedia, Digital detox refers to a period of time during which someone “refrains from using electronic connecting devices such as smartphones and computers”.

Digital detox is supposed to help you reduce stress or help you focus on social interaction in the physical world.

Other benefits include “increased mindfulness, lowered anxiety, better appreciation of one's environment, and becoming more people-oriented”.

My four days of digital detox was all that and more.

Not only did I not have to lug my PC around, I also spent the entire time focusing on where I was, whom I was with, and what I was doing.

But I wasn’t completely digitally free. I DID take lots of digital photos of my physical environment and the people I was with, with my digital camera.

Since I was using a digital camera rather than a smartphone, however, I was not violating the guiding principle of digital detox because I had remained off line the entire time.

When I got back to Stockholm, there was a very special surprise waiting for me on my computer when I logged on.

All of the documents and photos that had so mysteriously disappeared had mysteriously reappeared!

They were right there waiting for me as though nothing were wrong.

I guess Shakespeare really was right after all.

Special thanks to our charming hosts Sirpa Karki and Hanna Sondell at #VisitUmea and #VisitVasterbotten as well as all of the guides and others that made our trip to Northern Sweden so special.
