Japanese Travelog Part Nine

Michael Taylor is flown to Tokyo, Japan, by ANA InterContinental Tokyo, where he spends two nights as part of a press trip of journalists and travel writers from Hong Kong. Today Michael checks out Tokyo's trendy Roppongi district.

Roppongi 101

Roppongi is one of Tokyo's most important districts. You'll find commerce, shopping, entertainment, and nightlife in this bustling part of the Japanese capital. Many foreign embassies are located in Roppongi.

If you are into culture, meanwhile, Roppongi is home to a collection of museums hosting temporary exhibitions.

Roppongi, which is Japanese for six trees, got its name in the 17th Century because six very old trees were growing there. Three of them were cut down, and the other three were destroyed during the second world war.

Here's a short list to things to see and do in Roppongi.

  1. Roppongi Crossing - Watch the world go by at this massive intersection – Tokyo's equivalent to New York's Times Square.
  2. Roppongi Hills - Shop till you drop at this huge shopping and entertainment complex.
  3. Mori Tower - Take an elevator to the viewing deck for a panoramic view of the sprawling metropolis.
  4. Mori Art Museum - Check out what's on exhibition at this modern art gallery.
  5. Mouri Garden - Feed the ducks at this traditional Japanese garden.
  6. Suntory Museum of Art - Check out what's on show at this stylish gallery.
  7. Virgin Toho Cinemas - Take in a movie at this nine screen theatre.
  8. Tokyo Midtown - Shop till you drop at this massive commercial and entertainment complex.
  9. National Art Center - Check out what's on exhibition at Japan's largest art museum.
  10. Bars & Clubs - Take a walk on the wild side at Roppongi's notorious nightclubs. Caveat emptor: The U.S. Embassy warns its nationals against patronizing some of these establishments.
